A South Jersey Doula's Guide to Preparing Your Hospital Bag

As a doula based in South Jersey, I've supported numerous families through their childbirth journey. One question that often comes up is, "What should I pack in my hospital bag?"

Drawing from my experiences and the feedback from the families I've worked with, I've put together a straightforward checklist to help you prepare your hospital bag.

Tips for Packing a Hospital Bag for Birth

But first, before we get to the hospital bag checklist for labor and delivery, let me give you two tips that may save you a huge headache down the road.

1. Pack Your Bag EARLY.

How early? Well, let’s say by 36 weeks, you should have the basics packed, and you and your partner should both know what’s missing.

2. Let Your Partner Pack the Bag(s).

Seriously, hand them the list and let them do it.

Because when you’re in labor or when you’re in a postpartum bed healing and snuggling with your little one, you will not be the one digging through the bags. It’s so much better to have confusing conversations now, like “Which robe?” or “What gray newborn sleeper are you talking about?”

Have them run around now and deduce what things you need. You should go into labor both knowing what the going home outfit for the baby looks like, but your partner is the one who should know WHERE it is because they’ll be the one retrieving it from its hiding place.
